Short term goal is to set up a network connection on a fresh Ubuntu 6.06 install on an Inspriron 8000.
The lan it's going into to get to the the web, has got XP boxes running smoothly on it. There's an ADSL Speedstream with a Zonet router inline with 4 ports to serve up the web. I've verified I can get a connection to the cable I am now using for the Inspiron but have found I've got to do some additional work to set up Ubuntu's end.
I've got no Unix/Linux back ground to speak of (other than a mid '90's version of Mandrake). I have started looking through the online Ubuntu sources.
Else a good beginners guide ? I see there's a Ubuntu for dummies

By going with such an old distro, you're giving up all the improvements and security patches that have been implemented since then.
If you're having to do some work to set up the network connection between computers, something is wrong.
I would highly recommend a newer build of Ubuntu such as 9.10 which is real easy to configure. Using the Synaptic Package Manager, ensure that Samba is installed with all the dependencies it needs.
You should be able to reach any of your Windows shares with:
smb://computername/sharen ame from within Places / Network.
In 5 weeks, 10.04 is coming out on the 29th of April and from what I hear, it's much better than 9.10.

Points well taken. Lan, which Is why I have already pointed that out to the owner of the laptop. The only reason I used it, was I had it burned on disk, and I was curious as to how much knowledge it would take to make the connection.
While I was doing some research it became obvious to me that the new distro's were well worth a new download, if one was to stick with Ubuntu. It turns out the owner plans on putting XP on the laptop. But, I did learn I don't have the knowledge for even a simple task.
