Is there anyway to block Yahoo messenger on a home computer? I have XP home edition. Please be gentle as I am in no way technologically advanced.
Thanks,

Hello mssharpe! Welcome to the forum! Yahoo has a page on how to open up ports so their program will work.
http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mesg/use/use-17.html
1. 5050 2. 80 3. All available
Those are the ports you need to block on your firewall. Unfortunately, the Yahoo messenger program also uses port 80 which just happens to be the port that is used by web browsers. If you close port 80, you won't be able to surf the web. If the messenger program can't use 5050 or 80, it'll scan until it can find any open port.
So, the bottom line is that you can't stop Yahoo messenger from contacting the Internet.

...amd it's a big problem for sysadmins that want to block Yahoo Messenger and Real Audio (RA can also use port 80). There are some commercial firewalls that will alolow you to block domains, but I don't think any home product has the ability to do it...

You I think with some hardware home routers you can deny application trigger usage. I don't know how well it works but basically it would look at the application layer and deny it that way.
I could have sworn Zonealarm did this but personally getting ZA to work with a more than a handfull or users is a PITA.
I have done it on a testbed just to see if it could be done when ZA was in the 2.5 stage ..god knows what stage its at now..but this is so computer resource intensive.
There might be a FreeBSD SPI firewall that you could tinkering if trying to get it to do what you want.

The easiest way to do this would be to figure out the exact servers needed for yahoo messanger and create host entries in your HOSTS file that point to 127.0.0.1.

That's a very good idea, those server names are:
cs1.yahoo.com, cs2.yahoo.com, and cs3.yahoo.com

I am using ZA 5.5 and it can block apps. Everytime an app like Y! tries to access the Internet for the first time, I get a message asking if I want to allow or block the app.

Have you tried it with with one PC being the router as such? Just curious on the type of performance hits.

The free version of ZA (which is what I am running) doesn't allow routing or connection sharing.
